  • SEO Step By Step Guide– 62. Dealing with Outbound Links

Many webmasters fear linking to other sites thinking that their page rank will reduce and that their search ranking will drop. This is not true. You can link to other websites as long as you think that such links will be useful to your website visitors. However, at the same time don’t link to hundreds of others sites from the same page. In normal circumstances you may not have to link to hundreds of sites from the same page unless you are having a links page.

One of the reasons why reciprocal linking died out is because of the fear that linking to other websites will dilute their website’s ranking. Google recommends outbound links from websites as long as it is happening in a natural fashion. Linking to other websites will not boost your ranking nor will it pull your ranking down. However, it will make your website an authoritative website whereby you give your website users with good resources from which they can benefit.

While linking to other sites you must select your links carefully so that they are relevant to your website’s content and matter. They must be reputed sites in the industry and should not be blacklisted or should not contain any malicious software embedded in them. It should be a safe website for your visitors. If not it will affect your website’s reputation and your website will be associated with the harmful website. You should never allow your website to be associated with websites with bad reputation. Good reputation is everything when it comes to online marketing. You should not be linking to insignificant content sites that may or may not be there tomorrow or the next year. So link only to websites that have a long standing history. If not many of your links may end up being broken links which will affect your website adversely.

You must have a regular schedule of checking your websites outbound links so that you can remove them quickly from your site if you should face any problem. By doing this, you will save your website’s reputation and minimize the damage broken links may cause to your website if any.

Your website will attract more visitors if they find your website to be a highly resourceful site and one of the ways of being resourceful is providing your website users with the relevant information that are found outside your website. While linking to other websites, Google recommends that we keep the links to 100 links per page. Too many links on the same page can indicate that they are paid links and this may put off genuine users and you will not be considered an expert in the field rather a link farm. Therefore, moderation is the key to success when it comes to SEO. Never go overboard with any of your SEO efforts and you can be sure of remaining safe.
