  • SEO Step-By-Step Guide– 212. Looking Beyond Google

For some reason or the other our minds refuse to think beyond Google when it comes to search engine success. Google has literally monopolized the search industry. Google holds around 70% of the market share in the search industry. So, many webmasters feel justified in their approach, which concentrates just on Google. However, we should start thinking about the other search engines too because the internet is a highly unpredictable place anything can happen anytime so you must make sure that you have good rankings in at least the top search engines. After Google comes Yahoo and it holds a market share of about 17%. Yahoo’s popularity has come down from over 20% last year to 17% this year. Therefore, those who have got their ranking in Google are still laughing and those who thought Yahoo would bring some good traffic are depressed. Bing has seen a sudden interest in the internet community from roughly about 5% few months ago to about 9% last month. The next popular search engine is Ask and it enjoys about 2.5 of the market share. These five search engines constitute 99% of the web traffic and the remaining search engines share the frugal 1% of the market share. Therefore, it does not make sense to concentrate on the other search engines.
These figures are in a way helpful to the webmasters because their efforts can now be highly focused with just about five search engines to deal with. The competition level is so high in Google and it becomes almost impossible for new websites to get good rankings.
When you want to concentrate on other search engines, you must also remember not to harm your current rankings with Google in any way by the tweaks and changes that you will make to your website to make your website more friendly to other search engines. It may not be worth the effort to lose your ranking in Google, which is capable of sending 70% of your website traffic. Prioritize your efforts so that you get traffic from all the top search engines. Yahoo continues to make new efforts to gain the market share. Yahoo tries to take a portal based approach so its concentration is divided where as Google search is fully focused on various formats of search. Bing as well is trying hard to win the market. It has seen a tremendous growth in the past few months and if it continues to grow at this rate, it can overtake Yahoo. Therefore, it is high time to start concentrating on Bing as well so that when its market share improves you will already start enjoying the benefits while others would have just started making their efforts to get good rankings in Bing.
