  • SEO Step-By-Step Guide – 182. Common SEO Misconceptions

We still come across a number of wrong notions about SEO and many unscrupulous SEO companies try to thrive on people’s ignorance. Therefore it is important for you to clear off all such misconceptions that will cost you your precious time, money and efforts. Let us discuss few common and most widely found misconceptions that prevail among people.

PPC for good ranking – Many people think that Google has some way of controlling the rankings of websites based on their PPC spending. This is totally wrong; Google ranking does not have anything to do with your website’s ranking. It does not make it better or worse. This easily evident from the fact that number of companies that do not use PPC of any form get good ranking in Google’s search results pages and at the same time we also find a number of companies that rely on PPC heavily have poor ranking. We cannot find any special pattern between PPC and your ranking. PPC will get you instant traffic and if it is well implemented you will get highly targeted traffic. However, you will be paying a considerable amount of money for your PPC campaigns.

Same server issue – Having multiple sites linked to each other on the same server will affect the ranking of the sites negatively. Matt Cutts clarifies in one of the interviews, in general this will not affect your websites in any way. Hosting multiple sites belonging to the same owner is a common phenomenon. As long as they do not have the same content in them one should not worry about hosting multiple sites on the same server. However, if you are going to have hundreds of sites on the same server linked to each other and with similar content then this might set off the search engine alarms. So we need to take into consideration the range of sites that we are talking about.

Amount of Content on page – People tend to put a figure on the number of words that must be on each page to get ranking. One of the common figures that we come across is 250 to 300 words. In fact, there are no hard and fast rules on the number pages your web pages should have. You just need to follow your commonsense on this factor. If you have around three to four keywords to optimize each page then you will not be able to give enough keyword density for each keyword. So you will need a certain amount of legitimate and useful content on page that will allow you to optimize your pages for those keywords. So do not include content if it does not make sense to add them on a particular page. As always make your pages for the visitors and not for the search engines.
