  • SEO and Child's Play, Part 2

SEO is like the penguin game I played last week. It includes all the different aspects you need to keep a handle on so you can rise up the SERPs. You have to greet your customer (make your site user friendly), and seat them on comfortable chairs (landing pages). Make sure you have the menu available (keyword optimization) and figure out what they want to eat (track your visitors and find your target demographic).
Serve up the hot meal in a timely manner (make sure your call to action is reliable and convincing) and make sure to gather all the data (tips) you can. Clean up your diner regularly, checking for broken links, and use your advertising power to bring in new hungry prospects.

Extra profits can be folded back into your site for improvements. Buy a plasma TV (add some sweet graphics or a widget to your site); invest in comfortable seating (improve internal site architecture to make navigation easier) and consider streamlining your loading time by simplifying your home page ( you can skate faster with a better Quality Score!)

The trick is to juggle all of this so it happens simultaneously. You have to think ahead, anticipate and make sure you have given yourself enough leeway. Be prepared for the process of rising up the SERPs to take a while – Rome wasn’t built in a day, and the penguin didn’t earn her ticket back in one night’s work, either.

Once you have managed to balance all of the factors, however, you can kick back and enjoy the benefits, with just a hand on the wheel to make sure your ice floe is steering the right way. A little routine maintenance is all it takes to keep a truly optimized site running smoothly, if you play the game right from the very first screen!
