  • Pay Attention To Your Website’s Architecture

If you don’t pay attention to your website’s linking architecture you might be creating blocks for yourself that prevent search engines from crawling your website completely. For better ranking, you need an extensive crawling of the spiders so that all your website’s pages are accessible through organic search for the words that you have optimized them for.

They depend on your website’s architecture to access the pages and latest updates to your site. There are few factors that you need to take into consideration with regard to your website’s architecture so that search engine spiders can crawl your website completely.

Try and avoid dynamic parameters in your URLs as much as possible as search engine spiders are slowed down while crawling such URLs. The rule of thumb should be to keep the dynamic parameters to be under 2 parameters. Secondly don’t stuff your page with too many links to other pages try to keep the number of unique links to be under 100 per page. When you have too many unique links search engine spiders may skip some of the links leading to incomplete crawling of your website.

The next important factor is to keep all the pages as close as possible to the home page. Don’t bury your pages deep into your site. So come up with an effective architecture that will keep all the pages close to the homepage.

Also do not bury your important pages under membership section. When a page requires a session Id or cookies to access them, then search engine spiders may not access them as they will not be able to retain these components while crawling.

Another common factor that all of us know but sometimes overlooked is frames. Frames can become a major block for the spiders so avoid using frames in your website design.

Some of the websites we see online require a specific action such as submission of one’s email id after clicking the submit button or captcha check to access the important pages of the website. Search engine spiders may not be able to get past these pages so you need to carefully design the site structure so that you will not hamper the effectiveness of your other SEO efforts because of poor website architecture. Pages accessed through select forms too are another area to be paid attention to.

Try to avoid dropdown menus for your site navigation though it is one of the most widely used navigation approach, this too can hinder effective crawling. Another issue to be addressed is pages or products that can be accessed only using the search tool, these pages too cannot be accessed by search engine spiders.

These are some of the areas you need to pay attention to while designing your website. If you want to get better results out of your SEO efforts then you should create a search engine friendly website keeping in mind the above factors. All the important pages of your website should have links from your homepage because that is the point of reference for the search engine spiders.
