Why should you even try to optimize for misspellings, etc? Because if you don’t, someone else will. Now, you have to research keywords carefully to see just how many people actually mistype and hit enter (with auto suggest, misspellings are becoming rarer).

If you find a dozen or so common misspellings that escape the auto routers many use, you might consider trying to take advantage of the situation and optimizing a few articles. You want to be careful here because you don’t want to look like an idiot, which is easy to do when dealing with misspelled words.

You don’t want your competitors getting hold of the misspellings and using them to spam the search engine with second rate stuff. This especially holds true if the keywords are your domain name.

You never, ever want to leave an opening vulnerable to capture or attack, so you constantly have to seek out and address any limitations. The best way to build a site is to take each step all the way and cover every eventuality. If you take every opportunity to optimize and snag all the traffic you can, your competitor will be unable to gain a foothold.

This is also a good reason to snatch up domain names as well. It would be a shame to lose out to a site that is simply attempting to run an affiliate or similar site off of your good name, but all the traffic that comes through the misspelled search gets diverted away from you!

Once you have settled on your domain names and keywords, you might like to have a site dedicated to that in particular, where you can host your web pages, articles etc that you don’t want on your main site.

You can even poke a little fun in a professional way – Have your main page for your sister site let visitors know they have reached an annex devoted to the ‘bloopers’ everyone makes, including typos. You can poke a little fun, invite them top look around, maybe have a game or a widget. The poof! Off they go down the link to your main site.

This is a great way to use your blog as well, to increase PageRank; blog about your fun site, and encourage visitors to attend. Eventually your ‘bogus site’ might even be worth as much as your regular one in terms of organic links and content.

Above all, remain vigilant. When you take the extra seemingly small unimportant steps, this is when your website will pick up and beat down the competition so you can dominate the field. All it takes is that little bit of persistence and covering all your bases to make a big difference!
