Keywords play a very important role in SEO and in a way, keywords form the basis of all SEO efforts. Therefore it is important that you understand this concept very clearly before you embark on any SEO efforts for your website.

What are keywords? Keywords are the words, phrases or terms used by the internet users to search for the information they need. When a query is passed in Google or in other search engines, the role of the search engines is to fetch results or websites that are relevant to the search that are made by the user. Every time you modify your search term the list of websites that are listed in the search results will change. Search engines use very advanced programs to identify the right websites for the searches made on the web. It takes just a few seconds for the search engines to retrieve those results but search engines have to work very hard at the backend to produce those results. This is where the concept of search engine indexing becomes relevant.

We will have a detailed discussion about search engine indexing in a different article as the scope of this article is limited to keywords. But for our purposes here you just need to understand indexing is the process used by search engines to compile data about websites and the content of websites so that it can fetch the right websites whenever a search is made. Unless a website is indexed already, search engines will not be able to list the website, simply because they do not know what is contained in the website.

Now returning to our main topic on keywords, search engines will tag your website with certain keywords. You have certain control over this tagging process and on telling search engines for which keywords should be used to tag your website. The SEO process will take care of this. As you have great control over search engine keyword tagging process, what you do or what you don’t do in terms of identifying the right keywords can affect the above process greatly. If you choose the right keywords and optimize your website for the right keywords, search engines will tag your website for those keywords, if you choose a wrong set of keywords for your website, then you will obviously be optimizing your website for those keywords and the search engine keyword tagging will also be wrong. As far as search engines are concerned the tagging is correct because they go by the data found in your website. However, as far as the choice of the keywords is concerned you may be wrong. So search engines are never wrong because they are programmed that way.

When your website is tagged for the wrong keywords, then it will obviously be listed for those keyword searches. What does that mean, it simply means that you will get the wrong crowd to your website and no further elaboration is required on how it will affect your sales conversions.
