  • Understanding How Google Interacts With Your Website

There are few basic concepts that you should know to understand how Google interacts with websites online. Among those concepts are the following three – Crawling, Indexing and Ranking.

When you launch a website Google’s spiders locate your website using the links that are pointing to your website from the sites that are already indexed by Google. When it finds your website, it crawls the website page by page and the depth of Google crawling depends on how well your website is structured and how well it is linked internally. It scans the pages including the text and coding.

Secondly, after crawling the web pages or the website, your website will be indexed. Indexing is a result of crawling and indexing happens automatically when Google’s spiders crawl unless there are factors that blocks Google’s spiders to perform a complete crawl. Once the page is indexed, you will be able to see your website in the search results when you make a search typing your website URL with the extension.

When Google indexes your web pages, it also assesses it on a number of criteria including the age of the website, keyword density, back links just to name a few. There are over 200 factors using which Google will assess your website and rank your website. Google ranks each of your web pages individually and ranks it. Depending on Google’s ranking, your website appears in either the first page, second page or the fiftieth page when a user searches for a particular set of keywords.

Crawling, indexing and ranking take place regularly. We are often misled by a number of SEO professionals, that we need to submit our website to the search engines to get the website indexed. Contrary to this view, we need not have to submit our website to any of the major search engines. The search engines themselves will find our website as long as we have links pointing to our site from already indexed websites. So instead of submitting your website to the search engines you need to find ways of leading search engine spiders to your website. Some of the effective ways include submitting articles to press release sites about the launch of your website with a link pointing to your website. You can also use popular social networking sites, Digg, etc. Google’s spiders visit active social networking sites and press release sites often to keep their books updated, as there is a constant flow of fresh content in these websites. So by having your website’s link in these websites will increase the chances of faster indexing of your website.

You might be optimizing your website for a particular set of keywords but Google may pick your site for a different set of keywords based on the algorithm. So you need to now the keywords for which your website is ranked high so that you can continue to work those keywords to provide constant reinforcement. If you are going to be ranked for search phrases that are not going to bring any valuable traffic then you must consider reworking on your web pages’ content so that your precious bandwidth is not wasted on useless traffic.
