  • SEO Step By Step Guide: 6. Keyword Analysis Process

The business owner rather than the SEO company should initiate the process of keyword analysis or keyword research. There is reason behind this, to perform keyword research or keyword analysis one should understand the business niche to which the website belongs and the business model. No one can be more conversant about the respective business niche and the business model more than the business owner. So for all practical purposes, there should be at least input from the business owner than just reviewing the keyword generated by the SEO company.

While analyzing your keywords or performing your keyword research, it should be not be done in isolation. The latest online competition for the respective keywords should also be taken into consideration. There are number of keywords suggestion tools but before going to the keyword suggestion tool, there should be an independent brainstorming. The brainstorming should include the company’s business development people. It is only the business development wing that will be able to feed the team with the latest trends and vocabulary used by people to look for your services or products.

Your keywords analysis process should first list all the primary keywords. The primary keywords that you have listed should be grouped in terms of number of words. Under each keyword in the list of primary keywords, secondary keywords should be listed. Primary keywords are words that are directly related to your core business, products or services. Your primary keywords should receive the most attention. They should be found in the title of the webpage, head tags, domain name, URL of that particular page, website content, etc. More on this will be discussed in future posts. To give an example for primary and secondary keywords, if your offers website design services, that your primary keywords will be, “web design services” and your secondary keywords would be something like, “website revamping” “website redesign”, etc. These secondary keywords should try to get the traffic that look for services that are related to the main or core services. In essences whether it is website design or website redesign, it is the same for a web design company. It has to come up with new designs based on the customer input. However, the number of people who search using the term ‘website design’ will be more than the number of people who would be using ‘website redesign’.

When primary keywords have too much of competition you must try to improvise your strategy and tap on the traffic that will be using the secondary keywords. This varies from industry to industry. That is one of the reasons why the business owner should be closely involved in the keyword analysis.

After listing both primary and secondary keywords, you would notice that you would have come with a long list of keywords for your website. There are niche markets for which people come up with hundreds of keywords.

Let us continue this discussion on the keyword analysis process in the next post.
